It’s a baby boy for Cate Blanchett

The Oscar-winner, Cate Blanchett, 38, and her playwright husband Andrew Upton welcomed their new baby boy, Ignatius Martin Upton, on Sunday in a Sydney hospital. The ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age’ and ‘I’m Not There’ star’s new son weighed in at 3.6kg, or just under eight pounds, according to sources. The baby is the third son for the couple, who already have Dashiell John, aged six, and Roman Robert, aged three.

The newborn comes just days before Cate is due to attend a national summit for the future organised by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Blanchett is scheduled to chair a session titled ‘Towards a creative Australia” at the Australia 2020 Summit in Canberra this weekend.

Cate Blanchett won an Oscar for her role in ‘The Aviator, in which she portrayed Katharine Hepburn. Cate missed out on a second Oscar at this year’s ceremony, losing out to Tilda Swinton and Marion Cotillard in two female acting categories.

She is shortly to star alongside Harrison Ford as Agent Irina Spalko in the fourth installment of the Indiana Jones series, titled “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”
